hello fall!

seriously, i love this time of year.  the days get a bit crisper around the edges, scarves come out of hiding, you can buy new black cardigans everywhere... fall is my favorite time of year.  i've already had two pumpkin spice lattes, and bought one very bright orange glitter skull.

today is the skagit valley family farm festival (it was yesterday too!), and we're going to hit a few farms with some friends.  usually we do it all two days, and make it to almost all the farms, but this year we decided to not do as much.  partly because we're down to one car, and partly because yesterday i had a wicked hangover and wanted to go nowhere except back to bed.  this morning i actually got up a reasonable time, am almost done with my first cup of coffee, and am ready to go out and see some pumpkins and corn mazes!

the downside of fall

is that i never want to go to bed because there are too many awesome things to do.  tonight i made a rad dinner (stewy goodness), baked these crazy cute mini pumpkin cakes (which are being frosted right now), got some grocery shopping done, painted my nails, painted my toenails, tidied up the kitchen i destroyed with all the baking and cooking, watched an episode of SVU and now i'm blogging.  i never, ever, ever want to go to bed.

also, why is it that i never want to bake before 9 p.m.?  is there a name for this nocturnal baking?  it's like my favorite thing.

good morning, sunshine

sure, it's the middle of the afternoon now, but i can't help that i still feel like morning. i think it's the cup of coffee in my hand and the fact that it hasn't brightened up all day. while i love the fall, and the leaves changing color and the chill that makes a day spent inside seem totally okay, i admit i could do without it getting darker. that's what made fall in colorado so awesome; cool enough to start hibernating, but not dark and dour outside.

this head cold i caught from the kids is making me miserable. it went right into my sinuses first, causing terrible head pain, and now it's in my lungs. awesome! it burns when i breathe. it hurts when i cough. i'm giving myself shaken baby syndrome with the coughing. at the moment, my dear man is out getting some goldenseal to help with the expectoration. i'm certain that everyone wanted to hear about my mucous today, sorry! i just feel lousy, and we all know i am a whiny baby when i don't feel good.

i felt bad enough to take two days off work (!!!), meaning i'm on day four of staying at home. it's like a vacation, albeit snottier. i wish i felt better and could do something more productive than sit on the couch whining or napping. although i did finish a book, introduce the boychild to his first zombie movie, watch a goth opera with him, carve pumpkins, and make a few quiches. i guess i haven't been entirely useless.

i'm also all about putting glitter on various gourds. good times. i suppose i should go take a shower or at least brush my teeth, and pretend to be a grown-up.

fall notes

i have a startling confession to make. okay, not so startling. this is actually probably less of a confession and more of a "hey, i noticed." why am i making grand pronouncements? there's no need for that. i have this horrible habit of drinking a lot in the fall. i don't know what it is exactly that prompts me to buy actual hard liquor and drink it liberally when the weather turns. this is kind of fun the night i do it, but the next day is usually shot in the face. dammit. last night whiskey ginger's were my best friend, today i did little more than eat half a loaf of sourdough bread and drink massive amounts of water. i had so many plans! of course, most of them i made while under the influence, so it's probably good i didn't get most of them done. of course, the nap i took this afternoon/early evening was delightful, but i have this feeling like maybe i won't sleep so well tonight. when i had two days in a row off weekends, this tendency of mine to drink a lot when the leaves change color was not a big deal. i spent one day recuperating, and one getting shit done, but the random days off means i get nothing done. nothing!

i did make it to the fabric store, where i picked up some tulle for my costume and the premier issue of craft magazine. i've been looking forward to this for so long, and honestly, i was seriously disappointed. it was kind of the same-old crafty stuff i've been seeing on-line and in other magazines for months, and the $15 price tag is ridiculous. if i had actually realized how much it was while i was throwing it in my cart, i would not have bought it. it was just right there by the checkout! and it doesn't look like a $15 magazine. i'm sorry, i wish i had a better review of it, but i don't. the blog is good, not all the projects in it sucked, but overall it was kind of a stinker.
